SAM Ranks 97 Among ENRs Top 500 Design Firms

April 21, 2014

Surveying And Mapping, LLC (SAM) has again been recognized by Engineering News Record (ENR) as a top engineering design firm. Ranking 97 for 2014, SAM is excited to have broken through to be among the top 100 companies on the annual ENR list of Top 500 Design Firms. This is a significant advancement from the company’s 2013 ranking of 126. SAM also ranked 65 for 2014 among the Top 100 Pure Designers, a category that focuses on companies not engaged in construction.

The highly regarded ENR list is published annually and profiles the leading engineering firms based on revenue. This is the third time that SAM has appeared on the list. The firm’s rapid advancement on the list reflects the exceptional growth and business success the company continues to experience. SAM is one of the largest and fastest growing surveying and mapping companies in North America. In 2013, the firm grew their gross revenue to $127.4 million — a 40% growth rate over the previous year.

In data subsequently published by ENR, SAM also ranked well in several market categories and regions. In the 2014 ENR Top Design Firm Sourcebook, SAM ranked in three national market sectors: for Transmission and Distribution Plants the firm ranked 22; for Pipelines the firm ranked 12; and for Petroleum the firm ranked 25. Taken collectively, these rankings continue to demonstrate a leading presence for the firm in national markets.

For the Midwest Region in 2014 SAM was the number one (1) ranked firm in the Surveying and Mapping service category. Overall, the firm ranked 41 among the 123 firms on the 2014 list, with a revenue of $28.78 million in the region. This was a significant increase in SAM’s previous ranking of 50 in 2013. The ENR Midwest Region includes the states of Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, as well as eastern Missouri and parts of Ohio. By individual state, SAM ranked 14 overall in Ohio. Within the Midwest market sector categories, SAM ranked number four (4) for Power and number three (3) for Petroleum.

For the Texas/Louisiana region SAM ranked 18 out of 129 firms, with revenue of $69.56 million in the region. For the regional subcategories, the firm ranked number one for surveying and mapping services and number 17 for revenue in Texas alone. The firm also ranked number 8 in the petroleum market sector, number 5 in the power market sector, and number 10 in transportation. Although SAM operates across North America, these rankings reflect the continued strong presence the firm has in its home market.

For Colorado/Wyoming in the Mountain States, SAM ranked 24 out of 71 firms, with a revenue of $10.5 million in the region. This is a significant move up from our overall ranking of 33 in 2013. For 2014 the firm also ranked number 2 in the petroleum market sector and number 2 in surveying and mapping services. SAM opened its Denver office in 2012 and these rankings demonstrate how quickly the firm has continued to establish itself in that region.

SAM remains somewhat unique among its peers on the ENR list, with few companies of its size who specialize in surveying, mapping, and geospatial solutions. The firm has established a reputation as an industry leader in the application of technologies such as airborne and mobile LiDAR to support engineering design. With six full service offices across the U.S. and about 650 employees, the company has the ability to deploy resources quickly for large-scale projects in multiple market sectors.

The 2014 overall rankings appear in the April 21 edition of ENR magazine. A copy of the rankings and a companion story is available online at the ENR website.
